Our city through our prism

One day our English teacher Odeta Gruselioniene told us she has to go on the project to Norway. We were so happy. Wouldn’t you be? No English lessons for a week or more. Hooray! Yahoo! Hooray!

But no… She told us there will be a project hung on our poor heads. We will have to go out during our English lessons and to find the most beautiful sites of the places and take pictures. At least not to sit and do grammar…

Me, Ruta, and Ingrida decided to work on the project together. We were wandering through Marijampole, the 7th biggest city in Lithuania, to find some places of interest. And we found! We took lots of wonderful pictures , selected the best ones and made a project.

We want you to look at it and say some comments. Maybe you will like it?!

Šešupė is the biggest river of Marijampolė.It distinguishes oneself wonderfuls banks.Around Šešupė there are settled many parks.

It is the Poetry park. It is one of the most popular parks because it is in the centre of Marijampolė. It is the only park wich has impressive water fountains.

It is The Quiet park.It distinguishes itself for a quiet and still environment, so it’s name describes the park.

It is The City park. There are many trees growing, so it is dark in the park and it’s very dangerous to walk in it in the evenings.

Near the Quiet park there is the public Petras Kriaučiūnas library. It is the only public library in Marijampolė. It is being visited by children and adults.

It is the Culture house. Therein many different shows, concerts, expositions go on. There we can attend different clusters. There is a Marriage place settled here.

It is the only cinema in Marijampolė. It has two halls: small and big. Therein films right for everyone are showed.

It’s the only Drama theatre in Marijampolė. The most of visitors are elderly people. There are showed various plays and performances.

Trees come into bloom in Marijampolė parks in spring, so there are many beautiful views. It is a big pleasure to walk in the parks in spring, because it is the most beautiful season of the year.

It is one of the most substantial the oldest gymnasium in Lithuania and it celebrated 141 years birthday this year. Many famous Lithuanian people finished this gymnasium.

We love our school and are proud of it.

ROMAN _ MY TOWN

“Come! It is a wonderful town. I’m sure the charm of our streets named after hospodars and founders will catch you in its magic. A picturesque town with picturesque people ! I think you are smiling. I have remained an out-dated exception. A phenomenon. A provincial who loves his town and adores his townsmen….”

The town of Roman is situated at approximately 46Km east of Piatra- Neamt, on the left bank of the Moldova river. This town, about which Dimitrie Cantemir said it had founded during the Roman emperor Traian’s region and which was firstly mentioned in documents six centuries ago, has a rich historical and cultural background, considered at present as being an industrial centre ( the former pipe works, now Mittal Steel S.A. started functioning in 1957, being then the greatest rolling of this kind in the country).

Mentioned for the first time, together with Piatra-Neamt, in the Novgorod Chronicle ( an external document, generally accepted as dating from 1387 – 1392) Roman is much older, developing at the confluence of the Moldova and Siret revers. Considered as being one of the most important medieval centres in Moldovia, the town of Roman was firstly mentioned in an internal document on the 30th March 1392.
Built for a defensive purpose, the fortress offered protection to local craftsmen and traders, their activity contributing to the affirmation of the town as an important both cultural and economic centre.

The town of Roman is also characterized by buildings belonging to the national cultural patrimony:
- aristocratic buildings dating from the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries
- palaces built in the baroque and neogothic styles, designed by the great architects of the age, such as the Negruzzi palace.

A few examples are illustrating:
- the building of “Roman – Voda” Highschool situated in the eastern part of the town’s square impresses the viewer by its massivity and the beauty of the architectural elements.
- the Military Hospital ( the House of Marchal Prezan) – displaying the most representative elements of neoclassicism with east – European reverberations.

Situated on the plain – hill area of the central Moldavian Plateau, at an average altitude of 250m Roman completes its natural environment with an area of 15000 hectares of forest, besides the poplas and willow meadows in the major riverbeds of the Moldova and Siret. The main species an common oak, beechtree, cherry tree, ashtree, sycamore maple, completed by mixed species such as common maple, hornbeam and acacia. Dendrologically speaking, The Valeni Park (3,4hectares) as well as the Climesti Park (1,9 hectares) are rarities, having wood species extremely race: Ginko, Biloba, the tulipe tree, Caucasian pine, magnolia, yew tree or sequoia.

A real living plants for producing oxygen, the forests surrounding Roman have a major economic importance- industrial wood, wood for rural buildings and local needs, wickerwork, forest fruits, beekeeping, and , not in the least, the hunting potential especially wild boars, deer and rabbits. The beauty and variety of Roman’s stands grant them a special leisure role – The Dealu’ Marului. Stopover, The Climesti camp – as well as an important inspiring source – Cezar Petrescu Memorial House is situated at the edge of the forest in the Stejaru village, within Ion Creanga Commune.

Our town Tartu

Tartu is a university town and a city of youth!

The time-honoured university, museum-rich and Hanseatic city of Tartu lies on the banks of the River Emajõgi. The capital of sothern Estonia is the second largest city in the country (here lives ~100 000 people) and the oldest in the Baltic States (from 1030). Tartu is a modern city with a rich historical heritage and culture.

It is the cradle of the Estonian Song Festival, Estonian theatre and the Estonian state; Tartu is the intellectual capital of Estonia where national awareness and the culture of Estonia was born.

The most significant building of the town is the castle fortress built in the second half of the 13th century on a steep hillside extending to a swamp. In the upper section of the castle ruins of the Gothic palace, the oldest part of the fortress, remained. At the walls of its eastern side some of the bastion lower parts remained where a summerhouse was built in the 19th century (nowadays it is run as a teahouse). There also remained fortress’s external walls, corner stone framing, the oldest Gothic palace’s portal, some parts of plaster and fortification. In the 16th century the fortress was enlarged, strengthened by a bulwark and a palisade bastion was raised on its top and later it was gradually replaced by stonewalls, with bastions for cannons on their corners. The other fortress buildings from the times of the Turkish wars close the lower bailey. The biggest one (the Dobó’s Mansion) dated back to 1571 – a rectangular Renaissance castle with a storied keep above the entrance from the town side. This entrance could only be approached from outside across the drawbridge. In the 17th century this castle was rebuilt in Baroque style and elevated by another storey. On the western side of the yard the Captain’s house was built and on the north-western part there is a huge multi-angular gun bastion, where in the old times a castle chapel was situated and used during the Turkish occupations as a mosque. During feudal uprisings in the 17th century the castle was badly damaged. In 1702 Rákoczy’s rebels occupied the castle and before leaving Levice in 1709 they decided to destroy it. They burned it down, ruined the castle walls, filled the moats with ruins and thus the castle lost its function as a military fort. Less damaged buildings of the lower castle were later repaired and useless annexes were removed. Since 1958 the Tekov Museum has been seated here.

Piteşti, a beautiful town

Piteşti is a city of Romania, situated on the Argeş River. It is an important commercial and industrial centre , as well as the home of two universities : The University of Piteşti and ‘ Constantin Brâncoveanu ‘ University.
It is famous for its Trivale Forest where people walk and spend their free time , have fun together and meet their friends and also for ‘ The Tulips’ Symphony ‘ where people all over the country come to see the beautiful exhibition of rare flowers. Each year during springtime , Piteşti is host to this festival . Tulips were introduced locally in 1972 – 1973 and since then Piteşti has had the reputation of being the city of tulips.
Nowadays, Piteşti has a new image and you can see the mixture of old and modern buildings which make a beautiful sight together.<br>

The Town of the Romanian Car

Mioveni is one of the seventh towns of Arges county.

It is known as the town of the Romanian car

because the first Romanian car was manufactured

here, taking the old name of the land: Dacia.

The car factory has begun a Romanian-French

cooperation after December 1989 and now it is

called Dacia-Renault Car Factory.

It is in fact the place where our parents work.

There are a lot of buildings in our small town:

five schools, two high schools, a Town Hall,

a Cathedral, five churches, a Culture House,

a Museum, a Hospital, four hotels, a Stadium,

a few restaurants, and a lot of supermarkets and shops.

Gdańsk (Polish pronunciation [gdaɲsk] (Image:Ltspkr.png listen); German: Danzig [dantsiç] (Image:Ltspkr.png listen), Kashubian: Gduńsk) is the city at the center of the fourth-largest metropolitan area in Poland.[1] It is Poland’s principal seaport as well as the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. It is also historically the largest city of the Kashubian region.

The city lies on the southern edge of Gdańsk Bay (of the Baltic Sea), in a conurbation with the spa town of Sopot, the city of Gdynia and suburban communities, which together form a metropolitan area called the Tricity (Trójmiasto), with a population of over 800,000.[2] Gdańsk itself has a population of 458,053 (2006), making it the largest city in the Pomerania region of Northern Poland.

Gdańsk is situated at the mouth of the Motława River, connected to the Leniwka, a branch in the delta of the nearby Vistula River, whose waterway system waters 60% of the area of Poland and connects Gdańsk to the national capital in Warsaw. This gives the city a unique advantage as the center of Poland’s sea trade. Together with the nearby port of Gdynia, Gdańsk is also an important industrial center. Historically an important seaport and shipbuilding center, Gdańsk was a member of the Hanseatic League.

The city is famous worldwide as the birthplace of the Solidarity movement which, under the leadership of Gdańsk political activist Lech Wałęsa, played a major role in bringing an end to communist rule across Central Europe in 1989. It is also the home and birthplace of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who is of Kashubian origin.
